See Plymouth on foot today with an expert local guide. This is where the Pilgrims set sail aboard Mayflower for the New World, and Sir Francis Drake sailed to defeat the Spanish Armada. Its strategic position and large natural harbor have made Plymouth a traditional stronghold for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
Walk up to Plymouth Hoe, where Drake was famously playing bowls when he received news of the invading Armada. "We have time to finish the game," he is reported to have said. From here, enjoy fine panoramic views of the area and out to sea.
Continue down to the historic Barbican from where the Pilgrims departed for America aboard the Mayflower in 1620. Captain James Cook set sail on his voyages to the Pacific from the same Mayflower Steps. View Island House, where some of the Pilgrims were accommodated. Outside is a board that lists all their names.
In the Barbican area, visit the Tudor Rose Tearooms for a traditional and delicious cream tea — a scone with clotted cream and jam, and a pot of tea.
Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship.
Please note: This tour is conducted entirely on foot. Tour requires approximately two hours of walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, gravel, grass, and steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
