Founded by the Romans as a thermal spa, Bath became an important center of the wool industry in the Middle Ages. In the 18th century, under King George III, it developed into an elegant town with neo-Classical Palladian buildings designed to blend harmoniously with the carefully restored Roman baths.
A three-hour drive brings you to Bath, where you will admire the charming Pulteney Bridge. Completed in 1774, this is the only bridge in England lined with shops on both sides, featuring three arches and a central Venetian window.
Don't miss the sweeping Royal Crescent, easily one of the most beautiful streets in all of England. Here, you will visit the spectacular Roman-Georgian baths for which the city is named.
You will have free time to shop and purchase lunch (at your own expense) before you return to Portland.
Please note: Lunch is not included. You will have time to purchase lunch at your own expense during the tour. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Travel time to Bath is around three hours each way. Tour requires considerable walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, gravel, grass, and many steps. Participants must be able to climb a few steps unassisted to board the transportation. Suitable for guests using a collapsible wheelchair with a companion to assist; however, you must liaise with the onboard Destinations team, as the elevator at the Baths must be booked in advance. Elevator length is 1200mm; maximum weight is 500kg. The Baths' pedestrian exit is on Stall Street; wheelchair users and others requiring level access must return to the entrance hall via the elevator to leave the building. The passage through the courtyard is narrow in places; not advisable for those with claustrophobia. Guests wishing to avoid narrow spaces can omit part of the visit. Your time at the Roman Baths is unguided; Use of a handheld audio guide (included) will enhance your tour experience.
