Begin your journey at the pier with a short coach ride to the Old Prison Museum, the first prison built in Tierra del Fuego in 1896. Here, your guide will provide an introduction to the site’s history, and you’ll have time to explore both the interior and exterior exhibits. Some areas are self-guided, allowing you to discover at your own pace.
Leaving the city behind, you’ll travel north along the Pan-American Highway, crossing the Fuegian Andes. The drive takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes and offers spectacular views of lakes, valleys, forests, peat bogs, and glaciers. Before reaching Garibaldi Pass, you’ll stop to admire Lake Escondido, a hidden gem nestled among the mountains.
At Garibaldi Pass, nearly 1,500 feet above sea level, you’ll pause for a 30-minute photo stop. This vantage point showcases a breathtaking panorama where water, forest, and mountains meet—an ideal setting for reflection and relaxation.
Your next stop is Las Cotorras restaurant (or a similar venue). Here, you’ll enjoy a break with a delicious snack. Taste a traditional lamb empanada along with a buffet of finger foods such as sandwiches, Argentine pastries, quince jelly pie, and a small cupcake. Pair your snack with a beverage of your choice: juice, wine, hot chocolate, tea, or the local specialty “mountaineer coffee,” prepared with sugar, orange peel, and liqueur.
Finally, relax on the 50-minute drive back to Ushuaia pier, reflecting on the history, culture, and natural beauty you’ve experienced throughout the day.
Important notes:
