Brú na Bóinne - Archaeological Ensemble of the Bend of the Boyne
"The three main prehistoric sites of the Brú na Bóinne Complex, Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth, are situated on the north bank of the River Boyne 50 km north of Dublin. This is Europe's largest and most important concentration of prehistoric megalithic art. The monuments there had social, economic, religious and funerary functions."
Your tour today will offer you a rare opportunity to view inside the chamber of Newgrange, a unique and protected historical site. The highlight of the day tour is a visit to Brú na Boinne, the "Palace of the Boyne". This river valley was the cradle of Irish civilization. The fertile soil supported a sophisticated society in Neolithic times. Much evidence survives in the form of ring forts, passage tombs and sacred enclosures. The most important are three passage graves namely Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. You will have the opportunity of viewing Newgrange where your guide will bring this passage grave to life. Although not the oldest passage tomb in Ireland, Newgrange is without doubt Irelands best known prehistoric monument. Dated to around 3200 BC, Newgrange is 1,000 years older than Stonehenge and centuries older than the great pyramids of Egypt. With its monuments predating Egypt’s Pyramids by over 5.000 years, the area of the Boyne Valley is affectionately known as the Irish "Valley of the Kings". Included as part of the Brú na Boinne visitor experience you will have the opportunity to visit Knowth. Knowth consists of a large mound and 18 smaller satellite mounds. The large mound contains two passages that are independent of each other and each lead to a burial chamber. The eastern passage leads to a cruciform chamber. It contains three recesses and basin stones into which the cremated remains of the dead may have been placed. Rejoin your motor coach and guide for your return journey to Dublin and your awaiting ship.
Please note: All visits are outdoors so correct clothing should be worn (raincoat, flat comfortable non slip soled shoes). Access to the chambers at Knowth is not permitted. Handbags and bags cannot enter the Newgrange chamber and guests will be required to put them in secure containers outside. No photography or filming allowed. Not suitable for guests with claustrophobia.
