Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes
Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes together comprise three sites that make up 18,846 ha. It includes the fortress-like Seongsan Ilchulbong tuff cone, rising out of the ocean, a dramatic landscape. The site, of outstanding aesthetic beauty, also bears testimony to the history of the planet, its features and processes.
Visit Seongeup Folk Village, located at the foot of Mt Halla, contains precious cultural relics that have been handed down from generation to generation including residential houses, Confucian shrines and schools, ancient government offices, fortress ruins and stone monuments.
Among the cultural gems of the folk village are also intangible cultural assets such as folk plays, native cuisine, local folk craftsmanship, and local dialect. Even the trees are an important part of the area’s heritage. Several zelkova and nettle trees, hundreds of years old, stand at the center of the village, preserving the dignified atmosphere of a bygone era.
Next, head to Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) that rose from the sea in a volcanic eruption more than 100,000 years ago. Located on the eastern end of Jeju Island, the peak features a huge crater at its top. The crater is about 2,000 feet in diameter and 300 feet deep. While the southeast and north sides are cliffs, the northwest side is a verdant grassy hill that is connected to the Seongsan Village.
After this spectacular encounter with Jeju’s culture and nature, you’ll return to the pier.
