Join the Expedition Team for a Zodiac landing near the Hvalsey ruins. It is just a short walk to the ruins of the Norse church and farmstead that constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The expedition team will join you ashore to illuminate the significance of this site that was populated, farmed, and cherished by the Norse for almost 500 years. Early on, the climate here was moderate, the name Greenland was duly earned, and farmers traded the food they grew for furs and ivory harvested by the pre-Inuit Thule people. By the time the last Norse wedding ever documented in Greenland took place at the Hvalsey Church in 1408, it was becoming too cold and dry to farm. The settlers abandoned Greenland to the icy clutches of the encroaching deep freeze.
Please note: Included Expeditions cannot be booked in advance. The ship's Expeditions team will communicate finalized content and departure information. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
