This thrilling adventure features the drama and beauty of Aomori's famed attractions.
A drive through the city brings you to the Seiryu-ji Temple -- home of Japan's largest seated image of Buddha, the Showa Daibutsu. The setting's lush landscape and peaceful serenity will enchant you, as will the stunning 70-foot tall, 220-ton bronze statue.
Mt Hakkoda, in a range of dormant volcanoes, lies south of Aomori. An exciting way to capture its magnitude is from a ride on the aerial tramway. Board a tramway car and soar up more than 4,000 feet to the summit station. From this dazzling vantage point, you can see the spectacular swamps and fertile marshes left over from a series of volcanic eruptions that began almost two million years ago. In spring and summer, the forest is vibrant in multi-hued shades of green. Expect to find trees covered in glowing shades of orange and gold in the fall. In winter, Mt Hakkoda is glazed in ice and snow, and is one of Japan's best ski and snowboarding destinations.
At the top, take in the magnificent views that stretch from Mutsu Bay all the way to the Tsugaru Peninsula. Sit down at a local restaurant for a Western-style lunch.
Back at sea level, you will visit the Wa Rasse Nebuta House. The Aomori Nebuta is one of Japan's major festivals and is a designated 'important intangible cultural asset' in Japan. The Nebuta House introduces you to all aspects of the Nebuta Festival. Five large, well-built Nebuta floats are exhibited in the museum, and are updated annually.
Return to the pier with a deeper appreciation of magical landscapes and fascinating modern culture.
