Offering experiences both above and below the water, the Miyakojima Marine Park
Observatory introduces visitors to the flora and fauna of the ocean surrounding Miyako Island. Enormous clear panels offer a spectacular view into the undersea world, where colorful fish play.
Watch for the 4,700-foot-long (1,425 m) Ikema Bridge connecting Miyako and Ikema Island. It spans an incredible stretch of jade-green water.
Yukishio salt is a delicacy native to this region, known for its fine, powder-like form and extremely high mineral content. Indeed, it is the richest mineral salt in the world. The Salt Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the production process. Feel free to purchase (at your own expense) products made from this rare salt, including cookies and soft-serve ice cream.
Mangroves are often called "the forest of the sea." These communities of evergreen trees grow in brackish waters along the shoreline. Miyako's mangroves are Natural Monument and an integral part of Miyako Island's ecosystem. Check out the various subspecies as you stroll along the walkway that cuts through the forest.
Please note: Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, and steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Part of the Yukishio salt facility is under construction. Tour sequence may vary. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
