Walk with your guide and tour through Nagasaki's former Foreign Settlement. The Oura district was an area in Nagasaki where foreigners were allowed to reside when the end of Isolationism signaled a return to outside interaction. Japan opened its doors to Western trade, and this part of the city became prosperous and immensely busy. Visit the Oura Church, built in 1865. Originally constructed as a wooden church, it was designated a national treasure in 1953 as the oldest existing church building in Japan.
You'll also explore Glover Garden, named for a 19th-century Scots merchant who strongly influenced the industrialization of Japan. It was the first Western-style wooden house in Japan.
Tour the small Museum of Traditional Performing Arts to see the furnishings and floats used during Nagasaki's Kunchi Festival. This is one of the three great festivals celebrated in Japan annually.
You'll have time for shopping at the small museum gift shop and among the street vendors outside Glover Garden.
Please note:
Tour requires approximately three hours of walking and standing; it is conducted entirely on foot. Terrain includes 70 steps to reach Oura Church, steep inclines, uneven surfaces and gravel. Glover Garden is located at the top of hill. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency, as some vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Due to services, visiting Oura Church may not be available. Some parts of Glover Garden will be undergoing restoration work. Tour sequence may vary.
