Te Puia is home to the internationally renowned Pohutu Geyser — the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere. The reserve also features dramatic silica terraces, bubbling mud pools, and steaming vents.
Encounter New Zealand's iconic Kiwi at the Kiwi Conservation Centre and marvel at the vibrant Maori-made artwork and sculptures throughout the site. You'll also learn about the fascinating local lore and legends that have shaped this land for generations.
The New Zealand Maori Arts & Crafts Institute offers an insight into the rich heritage and ancient skills of the Maori people. Watch master carvers and weavers at work and learn about the apprentices who come from across New Zealand to train in traditional crafts like carving, weaving, and creating intricate garments, such as flax skirts and embroidered bodices.
Following your exploration of the arts and crafts, enjoy a captivating cultural performance in the beautifully carved Te Aronui a Rua meeting house. The performance includes a powhiri (traditional Maori welcome), waiata (song), moteatea (chant), poi, and the world-famous haka war dance — an essential and stirring part of Maori culture.
