The historical importance of codfish in Portugal cannot be overstated. Thankfully, the Cod Museum exists to walk you through its story. Indeed, this is a space where one of the most epic stories of Portugal is told, from the "discovery" of Newfoundland to adventure on the (icy) high seas and cod-fishing for a living.
The museum showcases various methods of preserving and preparing cod, highlighting different ways of cooking and savoring it. From the famous Bacalhau à Brás to Bacalhau com Natas, you will discover a wide variety of delicious dishes that can be created with cod. The Portuguese claim that there are 365 different ways to prepare cod — an amazing coincidence!
The Cod Museum also delves into the cultural significance of codfish in Portuguese tradition and folklore. You'll learn about the rituals and customs associated with codfish, such as the traditional Christmas Eve feast where codfish takes center stage.
Your curiosity is piqued; it's time to taste this amazing fish that you now know so much about. Head to a local restaurant in Lisbon's downtown core. Sit down to a snack of Bacalhau (pronounced buck-a-low) in the form of a delicious, deep-fried codfish cake accompanied by a cool Imperial beer or bica — Portuguese espresso.
In the heart of the vibrant Baixa district, feel free to wander about its charming streets, full of history, to absorb its colors, cafés, boutiques and souvenir shops.
