Enjoy this intimate introduction to daily life in Iceland under the watchful eye of Europe's largest glacier — majestic Vatnajökull.
You'll leave the tiny fishing village of Djúpivogur and stop at the town of Höfn. From there, continue through a picturesque mountainous region to the outlet of Hoffellsjökull Glacier.
Around 1900, Hoffelsjökull extended much farther than it does today. Its retreat due to climate change has left behind a deep and tranquil lagoon, now home to rare plant species and a variety of birdlife. Take advantage of a 30-minute stop among these tranquil surroundings to explore on your own.
From Hoffellsjökull, continue to a guesthouse at the Hoffell farm for a warming lunch of soup accompanied with homemade bread, coffee and tea—an authentic and comforting countryside meal.
After lunch, head to a local horse range. There you will have the opportunity to meet some pure-bred Icelandic horses and have the opportunity to see the horses being put through all five gaits, one of which, the tölt, is unique to the Icelandic horse. After meeting the horses, head back to Djúpivogur enjoying the views along the way.
Please note: Travel time to Höfn is approximately 1.5 hours each way, with additional driving between the various destinations. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. The birds start migrating away around mid-August. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, grass, mud, and steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. Suitable for guests with mobility limitations with a companion to assist. Some sights can be viewed from the coach parking area; all walking is optional. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. Parents traveling with children under the age of 3 must rent a child's car seat from the tour operator; please see the Destinations team on board. You cannot use your child's car seat from home in Iceland.
