Step back in time and experience the charm of the Isle of Man’s historic railways on this unforgettable journey. Begin with a short drive along Douglas Bay to the Manx Electric Railway, the longest vintage narrow-gauge line in Britain. Operating since the late 19th century, this railway still uses original Victorian and Edwardian technology. Board your tramcar for a scenic ride through leafy glens and along dramatic coastal cliffs, passing the impressive Glen Roy viaduct before arriving at Laxey Station, one of the island’s most picturesque stops.
From Laxey, transfer to the Snaefell Mountain Railway, the only electric mountain railway in the British Isles. Ascend 4.5 miles (7.2 km) to the summit of Snaefell, the island’s highest point at 2,036 feet (620 m). As you climb, enjoy views of the Giant Laxey Wheel and sweeping landscapes. At the summit, take time to soak in panoramic vistas—on a clear day, you may glimpse England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales—before beginning your descent and returning to Douglas.
Please Note: This tour lasts approximately 3 hours and involves minimal walking (up to 0.5 km at the summit, at guests’ discretion). There are high steps when boarding and alighting the trains. The terrain is mainly flat, but the summit can be windy and cool, so guests should bring an extra layer of clothing. Refreshments are available at the summit but not included. Unfortunately, this tour is not suitable for wheelchair users due to the lack of accessibility on the Snaefell Mountain Railway.
