Riga was a major centre of the Hanseatic League, deriving its prosperity in the 13th–15th centuries from the trade with central and eastern Europe. Riga became an important economic centre in the 19th century, when the suburbs surrounding the medieval town were laid out, first with imposing wooden buildings in neoclassical style and then in Jugendstil. It is generally recognized that Riga has the finest collection of art nouveau buildings in Europe.
Start your day with a leisurely drive along the Boulevards of Riga where sites range from the 14th century Riga Castle to Alberta Street, considered the epitome of Art Nouveau architecture in Riga. Set out with your guide on a 30-minute walk along Alberta Street, admiring the architecture and soaking up the fascinating history as you stroll the cobblestone streets.
Back on the coach, continue to the Old Town of Riga. Stop at the National Opera House, considered to be one of the most beautiful opera buildings in Europe. Nearby stands the Freedom Monument, a symbol of the determination of Latvian people in their fight for independence.
Your walk will take you to the heart of the Old Riga and the Dome Cathedral Square where you will see the Dome Cathedral and the famous Riga Stock Exchange building. Walk past some of the city’s most famous architectural monuments including the 13th century St. Peter's Church, medieval dwelling houses "Three Brothers" and St. Jacob's Church.
After your discovery of this beautiful and fascinating city, return to the pier.
