Embark on a captivating journey from the pier to Butre fishing village. Prepare to be mesmerized by the awe-inspiring ruins of Fort Batenstein, erected in 1656. Perched on a hill, the fort offers breathtaking panoramic views of Butre’s picturesque surroundings—village, coastline, lagoon, rock formations, forest, fields, and hills. Butre, nestled in a lush forest, lies between the bustling communities of Busua and Asemkaw. Its history, shaped by conflicts between European and African powers in the 17th century, exudes a fascinating blend of culture and heritage.
Continue driving towards Dixcove, a charming town nestled along the shores of a rocky cove. This hidden gem boasts a natural harbor suitable for small vessels, supporting a thriving fishing industry. Explore the vibrant fishing town on foot, immersing yourself in colorful sights and lively atmosphere. Against this backdrop stands the iconic Fort Metal Cross, a medieval fort built by the British between 1691 and 1697.
Fort Metal Cross, originally known as Fort Dixcove, this fort was constructed with the intent of discovering gold in the area. Although gold remained elusive, the fort’s strategic location made it significant. The Dutch eventually took over, renaming it Metalen Kruis. As the westernmost Dutch fort on the Gold Coast (now Ghana), it became a World Heritage Site in 1979. Unlike Elmina Castle, Fort Metal Cross is compact, perched on a cliff with strategically placed guns and high walls overlooking the sea. Explore its history during a guided walking tour.
After your fort exploration, unwind and savor a delicious lunch at Busua Beach Resort, surrounded by natural beauty. Relax, take in the serene surroundings, and reflect on the rich stories you’ve encountered.
Finally, drive back to the pier, cherishing memories of Butre’s vistas, Dixcove’s charm, and the enduring legacy of Fort Metal Cross.
