Cruising Magdalenafjord

Magdalenafjord is located on the western coast of Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean. The fjord is surrounded by tall, rugged mountains interspersed with glaciers. There are remains of a whaling station on the sdhores of the fjord, first established by the English in the 17th century and later taken over by the Dutch. The remains of try-ovens for rendering blubber, some grave sites and many whale vertebrae are well-preserved by the Arctic climate. It is a scenic area and large enough to allow ships to maneuver and turn within the fjord.
