Appreciate the sights of Aomori's honored past with a visit to two celebrated landmarks. First, visit Japan's largest seated Buddha; then travel to the Wa Rasse Nebuta House to see eye-popping, award-winning festival floats.
Aomori may be a bustling, modern city, but reminders of its historic past are waiting to be explored. First, you will visit to the Seiryu-ji Temple -- home of Japan's largest seated image of Buddha known as the Showa Daibutsu. Savor the setting's lush landscape and peaceful serenity, as well as the stunning 70-foot tall, 220-ton bronze statue. Nearby stands an impressive five-story pagoda made entirely of wood from the hiba tree -- a large evergreen species prized for its brown-red bark. The pagoda's five stories represent the five elements in the Buddhist universe. The base symbolizes earth, then, going up, comes water, fire, wind, and the sky. Above the rings a chamber holds the remains of Buddha.
Pass through Aomori en route to the Wa Rasse Nebuta House. Aomori Nebuta is designated an important intangible cultural asset in Japan, and is one of Japan's major festivals. The Nebuta House introduces you to all aspects of the Nebuta Festival, which is treasured by the citizens of Aomori. Five large Nebuta floats are exhibited in the museum and are replaced annually. They are quite captivating.
Following this extraordinary adventure, you'll climb back aboard your motor coach for the drive back to ship.
Please note: The Great Buddha is located at the top of an uphill walk. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Tour operates subject to meeting a minimum number of participants.
