Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Budj Bim Cultural Landscape and see how the Gunditjmara people of south western Victoria established one of the oldest and most advanced aquaculture systems in the world.
You will begin with a transfer to the Kurtonitj Indigenous Protected Area, where your Indigenous guide will meet you. Stop and see the fascinating Budj Bim Seasonal Calendar installation and the remains of ancient Aboriginal stone houses. Your guide will then take you along a walkway where you will see the lava flows, fish traps and the network of aquaculture systems designed to trap and harvest kooyang for food and trade.
From here you will then transfer a short distance to the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre & Cafe. Here your Gunditjmara cultural guide will show you the kooyang (eel) holding tank and provide an overview of their habitat and lifecycle. Walk along the boardwalk and out onto the jetty over Lake Condah, where your guide will give you an overview of the Tae Rak wetlands and point out the extensive marine and birdlife of the lake. Take in the views to Budj Bim as your guide tells you the Gunditjmara creation story.
Following this you will enjoy a Kooyang Tasting Plate lunch of traditional foods before transferring back to you ship in Portland.
