Begin this walking tour by following your guide to the Place d'Armes and the entrance to Calvi's citadel, which perches on a rocky promontory overlooking the port.
Cross the drawbridge to enter the Old Town with its breathtaking vista of the red rooftops contrasting sharply with the crystal-clear sea. The main street brings you to St Jean Baptiste Cathedral set on the highest point of the promontory. Founded in the 13th century, it was partially destroyed during the Turkish siege in 1553 and later rebuilt in the form of a Greek cross. Step inside here to explore the interior.
Don't miss seeing the home of Calvi's most famous son, Christopher Columbus, born in Calvi in 1451. You will view the exterior of this fabled building as your guide tells you more about the man and his legacy.
Pass the 13th-century Caserne Sampiero, formerly the Governor's palace and now a military building, and admire the vista from the city ramparts.
Wander through the Ville Basse -- the lower town -- which sits at the foot of the ramparts. You'll find
Santa Maria Church here, and have a few minutes to unwind in the cool hush within.
Sample Corsican wine and snacks before you stroll along the café-lined promenade of Landry Quay en route back to the ship.
Please note: Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
