A scenic 90-minute drive through the Rif Mountains brings you to the city of Tetouan, founded in the 13th century.
You'll visit Dar Sanaa (the House of Crafts) -- a school that teaches traditional Moroccan crafts to young people, including plaster-carving, wood-painting, leatherwork and embroidery.
Venture into the maze of the medina (Old Town), moving from the Andalusian Quarter to the Jewish Quarter (Mellah).
At the Archaeological Museum of Tetouan, it will become clear why this place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The museum exhibits beautiful artifacts and pieces of history that show visitors the rich historical roots of Tetouan, including Morocco's pre-historic and pre-Islamic times.
Walk to a local restaurant for lunch.
Back on the coach, you will drive to the Jewish cemetery situated on the dramatic sloping hillside of Mount Dersa. Aside from its commanding vista, the cemetery features many tombs with anthropomorphic engravings -- a highly unusual feature for a Jewish cemetery.
You'll visit the Archeological Museum of Tetouan, constructed in 1943. Its exhibits are dedicated to the fascinating pre-historic and pre-Islamic times of Morocco. The pre-Islamic era in Morocco includes the history of the Romans, Phoenicians, Mauritanians and Carthaginians.
Heading back to Tangier, enjoy an introduction to this cosmopolitan city which has long been the crossroads of three great religions.
Please note:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Walking up and down hills is required in the medina. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring a hat and wear sunscreen. Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered and you must remove your shoes before entering mosque(s). Do not to take photos of military personnel without their consent. Mind your belongings at all times, particularly at points of interest or crowded places.
