Discover Trondheim aboard a vintage carriage of the world's northernmost tram and enjoy the panorama from Kristiansten Fortress. Since 1924, the Gråkallbanen tram line has traversed a 5½-mile (8.8-km) narrow-gauge track, winding from the heart of Trondheim to the suburban outskirts of Norway's third-largest city. The uphill route passes through residential enclaves, parks, charming wooden homes and beautiful gardens. Amid the cityscape below, the River Nid winds gracefully through its center.
Upon reaching Lian, change to a coach for a brief photo stop at Sverresli Viewpoint. Here, capture the postcard-worthy vista spanning the city, Nid River, Nidaros Cathedral, and distant Monk Island.
Journey onward to Kristiansten Fortress, a storied bastion erected in 1685 to safeguard against Swedish incursions. Delve into its rich history, from its role in World War II resistance movements to its subsequent transformation into a fire watchtower. From its hillside location, gain a new perspective on Trondheim's picturesque appeal.
Please note: Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour requires walking 300 yards (m) of walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, dirt, gravel, gradual inclines, and two large steps to board the tram. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Do not leave personal items behind on the motorcoaches or streetcar. There is no narration during the streetcar ride. There may be a short wait to board the tram.
