Depart the pier in Santarém, driving for 40 miles on Route 163. This is the Santarém-Cuiabá Highway -- the only way to reach southern Brazil by road.
Your destination is Tapajós National Forest -- a section of the Brazilian Amazon that is a major resource of tropical hardwoods. The Tapajós National Forest covers an area of 1,482,660 acres and is protected by federal law.
Your forest walk will last about two hours. This tour is recommended for those who are interested in the primary forest flora. Jungle men will accompany you to help identify many different species of trees, including Brazil nut and rubber trees.
Notes:
Minimum age is 12 years. Wear light clothing preferably trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, a hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes and insect repellent. Bring binoculars. Not advisable for guests with a heart condition or back problems, or for pregnant women. Tour operates subject to meeting a minimum number of participants. Local buses are used for transportation; they are not air-conditioned.
