Depart for the pier to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral, an 800-year-old building constructed on the site of an ancient well reportedly used by Saint Patrick himself. As the largest cathedral and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Ireland, Saint Patrick’s has been at the heart of Dublin and Ireland’s history and culture for over 800 years.
Today with your VIP you will be met at the Order Gate by one of the Cathedral Vergers in their ceremonial robes and brought in through the Church Yard. Entering through the Order Door (originally built for members of the Illustrious Order of the Knights of Saint Patrick’s), embark on a short tour of the ground floor including access to the Quire, which is usually closed to the public, to learn about the rich and varied history of the cathedral.
Following the ground floor visit, next is a climb up the 177 steps of the 15th century Minot Tower. There are plenty of stops on the way including a visit to the great West Window, an opportunity to ring a bell, and a walk through the recently restored Cathedral attic space to view the 14th Century timbers. Weather permitting you will climb to the top of the tower for an amazing view of Dublin.
The Vergers at Saint Patrick’s ensure that everything is prepared for service along with maintaining this ancient building. They have a great knowledge and understanding of the building and its many traditions.
Continue your tour with a panoramic drive of Dublin City as you make your way back to your awaiting ship.
Please note: Please note that the Minot Tower section requires climbing 177 steps in the tower, and visitors should be comfortable with enclosed spaces and heights.
