DAY 1:
Easter Island is one of the most enigmatic places on Earth. This overnight showcases the most compelling of its archaeological sites.
You've seen the photos; now, it's time to head to Akivi to see the seven restored Moai statues that represent the seven ambassadors sent to Easter Island by Polynesian king Hotu Matua. They form an intact line-up of "wow," watching visitors watching them.
You'll also visit the quarry beneath Puna Pau volcano, from where the pukao were extracted — the large red cylinders that adorned some of the statues.
Ahu Huri A Urenga is one of the 25 platforms not found on the coast. Instead, they populate the island's interior — likely corresponding to human settlements around agricultural zones. The ahu, restored in 1976, is a platform 42 feet (13 m) long by 13 feet (4 m) wide. Oddly, its single Moai had four arms, each with two pairs of hands, and it aligns with the winter solstice.
After lunch at a local restaurant, a panoramic drive brings you to the archaeological site of Orongo. This ceremonial site is perhaps one of the most outstanding and enigmatic places on the island. Once a small gathering of 52 houses built from flagstone, this is where the celebration of the birdman culture (tangata manu) and a related competition took place. From a nearby viewpoint, you'll see the crater lake, whose microclimate allows the growth of dense, varied, and exotic vegetation.
Check in at the hotel with time to rest before dinner.
An after-dinner outing allows you to view Ahu Tahai and its statues at sunset.
Hotel: Hare Uta (or similar)
DAY 2 :
Up early this morning, you'll head to Ahu Tongariki — a restored platform with fifteen re-erected statues and a platform 656 feet long. Watch the sunrise from this intriguing place.
Return to the hotel for breakfast and check out.
Your morning includes a drive to Rano Raraku on Easter Island's south coast. Here, discover the quarry that yielded the stone for all of the Moai carved on Easter Island. Three hundred and ninety-seven incomplete statues remain on the slopes of this extinct volcano, as if their makers vanished into thin air.
Back at Tongariki, see the statues and ahu lit up by soft sunlight, and pause for photos at Te Pito Kura, whose stone boasts curiously magnetic properties. This is also home to the largest Moai ever carved.
On Anakena Beach, famous for its pink sand and its two restored platforms, walk to the barbecue area for a delicious lunch. Live music and a dance performance complete a spectacular day out before you return to the ship.
Please note: Bring sturdy non-skid walking shoes. The tour is guided; an escort from the ship's staff may or may not also accompany the group. Tour operates subject to meeting a minimum number of participants. You must book this overland PRIOR to sailing; the cut-off date is 35 days before the ship's call at Easter Island. Accommodation is included (hotels are subject to change). Transportation by air-conditioned coach, any flights and entrance fees indicated in the itinerary, an English-speaking guide (unless otherwise noted), water on the vehicle, and meals (as indicated) are also included. Gratuities and personal expenses are not included. Bring your passport with you on tour.
