Set off on an ecoadventure to discover the geologic history of the region. Begin by venturing more than 350ft underground at the Akiyoshido Cave, one of the world's largest limestone caves. With millions of years of history, there are a so many highlights to discover as you traverse this fascinating cave system. Watch for the Hundred Dishes, an accumulation of limestone that looks like more than 500 plates stacked on one another, and the massive Golden Pillar, a stalactite pillar 50ft high and 13ft in diameter. The journey through the cave on well-lit and maintained paths will take about an hour. Don’t forget a light jacket as the temperature in the cave is a pleasant 62°F throughout the year.
After exploring the cave, your adventure continues above ground at Akiyoshidai Plateau, a quasi-national park and one of the country’s largest karst tablelands. Starting as a coral reef at the bottom of the sea some 300 million years ago, the sea receded, and time eroded the coral into the fascinating landscape you see today. Enjoy a short walk around the park, admiring the spectacular power of nature in this unique site.
After your eco adventure, enjoy a scenic drive back to the pier.
Please note:
Participants must negotiate stairs and/or uneven surfaces and is therefore not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Bring a light rain jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes. The path inside the cave is narrow at some points, so the group might have to walk single file.
