Welcome to a true West Coast experience where spectacular nature scenes and rich culture form a landscape perfect for a walking tour. A knowledgeable heritage guide presents engaging stories of those who have fished these waters and worked at the canneries of British Columbia's North Coast, leaving you inspired by their vision and fortitude.
A panoramic drive through Prince Rupert offers beautiful views of Kaien Island and Port Edward en route to the oldest intact cannery in BC — the North Pacific Cannery — now a National Historic Site. Established in 1889, the site connects you with an integral part of BC's industrial, economic and cultural history. You will see a working canning line, working salmon-processing lines, the net loft, manager and staff housing, the mess hall, and the company store.
Explore along the river's edge among the cannery's boardwalks, industrial buildings, and worker housing set in wilderness surroundings. Capture the ever-changing light as it reflects off the waters of Inverness Passage in the Skeena River Estuary.
You will have time to explore on your own with docents and interpretive guides providing on-site information. Shop for regional arts and crafts at the cannery store, where signature North Pacific Cannery merchandise is for sale.
Please note: Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf.
