Tender ashore to Halfmoon Bay for a scenic ten-minute transfer around the bays to the Ackers Point trailhead. From here, set out on a 90-minute round-trip walk along a well-maintained gravel track through lush coastal bushland. This relaxed, guided walk offers an engaging blend of natural beauty, heritage exploration, and wildlife viewing, making it a rewarding introduction to the quieter charms of Stewart Island.
You'll pause at Ackers Cottage — a modest but historically significant structure believed to be the oldest stone house on Stewart Island and one of the oldest surviving buildings in New Zealand. Built in the 1830s by Lewis Acker, an early settler, seal hunter, and boat builder, the cottage is made from local stone. Set on a grassy rise above Harrold Bay, it offers a rare glimpse into the island's early colonial life and maritime history.
Continue along the trail to the Ackers Point Light Beacon, where sweeping views extend across Foveaux Strait. Along the way, you may encounter native wildlife, including sea lions, little blue penguins, and a variety of coastal birds.
Please note:
Tour requires walking approximately 1.8 miles in total. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, moderate inclines, gravel, and grass. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Bring bottled water. Bring a backpack to stow any layers you shed. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes.
