Head out by motorcoach to the excavated city of Herculaneum, known to the Italians as Ercolano. The upper-class Romans built their beautiful villas and maintained luxurious properties in Herculaneum, most of which overlooked the sea. When Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, hot ash charred or consumed all the wood of the structures in Pompeii (Herculaneum's more famous neighbor). Herculaneum's destruction was the result of a flood of hot mud, which buried, sealed and protected entire buildings. This means that there are still marvelous inlaid marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized wood intact for you to view today. Explore on foot with your guide.
Stop at a cameo factory where artisans apply skills handed down for generations, intricately carving seashells, or coral into beautiful jewelry — true works of art making great souvenirs.
Please note: Backpacks and large bags are not allowed inside the Herculaneum excavation site; lockers are not available. Extensive walking for approximately three hours is required. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, gravel, grass, and steps. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses, wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. Headsets missing after the tour incur a fee.
