Begin your adventure with a visit to the Castle of Niokastro, situated at the southern end of the port of Pylos. Initially built by the Turks in 1573, the castle is a major landmark on the Peloponnese Peninsula. It was captured by the Venetians in 1686 and later recaptured by the Turks. Today, the castle houses the Center for Underwater Archaeological Studies.
A panoramic drive through the verdant landscape of the western Peloponnese leads to the ruins of King Nestor's Palace. Built in the 13th century BC, this is the best-preserved of the Mycenaean palaces. It featured in Homer's The Odyssey. Admire the remains of a magnificent throne room with a huge hearth and the room where the queen bathed — although only the stones remain, it is an impressive example of ancient Greek antiquity.
