The Ring of Beara is the least developed and most spectacular of all the southwest peninsulas. Beara's rugged land and craggy shores serve as an inspirational paradise for artists and photographers. With blue waters far below on the one side, and the majestic wall of the folded Caha Mountains on the other, the further you go, the more dramatic the sea views and the more tortuous the mountain terrain.
You'll stop in Castletownbere to see McCarthy's Bar, made famous by author Pete McCarthy. In his book McCarthy's Bar, the author pays amusing and affectionate homage to Ireland, recounting his rollicking adventures on the Emerald Isle while searching for his Irish roots.
Visit the village of Eyeries, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. It has beautifully painted houses, and the 1997 Falling for a Dancer television series was shot here. Eyeries is also the home of the award-winning Milleens cheese. You'll have time for a photo stop.
A stop in Kenmare affords you some free time to explore this pretty Irish village that enjoys the title of 'Kerry's first Heritage Town'. Refreshments are served in Kenmare before the final leg of the journey begins. The route back to Bantry takes you to the top of Caha Pass, where vistas extend from the craggy peaks of the Caha Mountains to the distant glens and lakes of the emerald countryside below.
