Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Castro to the vibrant Yumbel Market, where you will explore a colorful array of local land-and-sea products that represent the island’s deep agricultural and maritime roots.
Continue onward to the serene Rilán Peninsula and the small town of Wueltun, featured in the acclaimed film And Suddenly at Dawn. Here, you’ll learn about traditional Chilote trades and observe local artisans at work as they craft with materials such as basketry, wood, and wool. This intimate cultural encounter offers an inspiring window into the island’s enduring heritage.
Your visit includes a delightful tasting of local appetizers paired with wine or a refreshing calafate sour, providing a true flavor of the region. You will then travel to the pier at Yutuy, where a traditional Chilote boat awaits. Board for a beautiful navigation through the Castro Fjord, gliding past iconic palafitos—Chiloe’s famed stilt houses—before returning to the port of Castro.
Please Note
Your guide will make every effort to communicate in English; however, the remoteness of this region and its limited tourism infrastructure are part of its authentic charm, so we kindly ask for your patience with any language limitations he or she may encounter. This tour requires approximately 900 meters of walking over paved and gravel surfaces, including steps, inclines, and stairs to board the boat, so comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are strongly recommended. Weather in Chiloe can change rapidly—please dress in layers and bring a waterproof jacket, along with sunglasses and a hat for sunny conditions. Estimated timings include: a 0:20 drive to Yumbel Market, a 0:30 market visit, a 0:50 drive to Wueltun, a 1:20 cultural and artisan visit, 0:20 for local appetizers and a drink, a 0:30 drive to the Yutuy pier, and 0:40 of navigation through the Castro Fjord, for a total suggested duration of approximately 4.5 hours. Please note that all timings may vary depending on weather, tides, and local operating conditions.
