Travel to Hirosaki for a breathtaking tour of the city's most famous landmarks. It is a 90-minute drive from Aomori through the scenic countryside. The area around Hirosaki has been inhabited since the 8th century but wasn't declared a city until 1889.
Your first stop is at the renowned Hirosaki Castle Park. The castle was constructed in 1611, but the original structure was struck by lightning in 1627 and burned to the ground. Rebuilt in 1810, the castle still retains an aura of its ancient past when samurais ruled the country. This historic treasure sits tucked away in the lush and peaceful 121-acre Castle Park. One of the country's most popular natural spectacles also takes place here -- if you're lucky enough to visit during the last week of April and the first week of May, you'll witness the Sakura matsuri cherry blossom festival. The entire park turns pale pink when its 2,600 cherry trees are in full bloom.
Next, is your opportunity to see the fantastic floats that are used during Hirosaki's Nebuta Matsuri, which is held the first week of August. Japan is famous for its matsuri, or festivals. Elaborately decorated dashi, or floats, are pulled through the town. Made of washi paper that's carefully painted with depictions of gods, mythical creatures or historical figures atop bamboo and wooden frames, these jaw-dropping floats commemorate a city's shrine, or a seasonal or historic event. See floats featuring mythological warriors and grim battles scenes on one side, and beautiful women on the other. Not only are some of the coveted floats on display but a knowledgeable guide will provide commentary on the traditions and history surrounding this regional festival. Later, you can also enjoy a live performance of the music that's heard during the celebration.
Return to the ship via the same scenic route.
Please note:
Walking at Hirosaki Castle Park is over mostly flat, unpaved ground. To visit the floors inside, approximately 30 very steep (almost ladder) steps are required; This tour is not recommended for passengers with walking difficulties. The castle tower is closed to visitors due to restoration. Tour operates subject to meeting a minimum number of participants.
