This special tour offers a deep dive into Niigata’s traditional tile culture -- it’s all about superb craftsmanship and age-old tradition.
Head to Kawara Tier -- an information hub introducing the traditional Yasuda tiles that are a proud symbol of Niigata. Approximately 1,500 tiles are used on a typical Japanese house, and most of them come from right here in Niigata. Learn about the history and exceptional craftsmanship of Yasuda tiles while appreciating their beauty and durability through real-life exhibits. These tiles, known for their resilience to harsh snowy climates, have also adorned the roofs of many shrines and temples.
Next, a short walk will take you to a Kawara production company -- an exclusive experience available only to Seabourn guests. The facility, typically closed to the public, offers a rare chance to witness the tile-making process up close and learn about traditional manufacturing techniques.
Nearby, Yakimono Square showcases creative uses of tiles -- take a closer look as you explore.
For a twist on tile-making, visit a specialty tile workshop producing onigawara (decorative demon tiles). These iconic tiles, often found on Japanese rooftops, are made to protect homes from evil spirits. In this workshop, skilled artisans carefully handcraft each tile, from kneading the clay and carving intricate designs to carefully firing them in the kiln. The craftsmanship and passion of these artisans are truly inspiring. They also create decorative pieces for entryways and rooms, offering custom-made works to suit individual tastes.
After a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, you’ll explore the Northern Culture Museum. Once the estate of the Ito family, who rose from humble Edo-Period farming to become the largest landowners in the Echigo region, the museum features beautiful Japanese gardens, traditional architecture, and a rich collection of art and artifacts. Notice the buildings that feature Yasuda tiles, bringing your day full circle.
Please note:
