Fukui lies along the Sea of Japan, not far from Osaka or Kyoto. With the ocean to the west and beautiful snow-capped mountains to the east, Fukui enjoys splendid scenery all year round.
This tour takes you to Fukui for a visit to the Eiheiji Temple— lead temple for the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism. It is the "temple of eternal peace," so named for its location in the tree-clad mountains on the rocky coast of western Japan.
The temple was founded in 1244, and its stillness makes it an ideal training center for new monks. Its seventy-plus pavilions are surrounded by solemn, tall trees more than 600 years old.
You will also visit the Tojinbo Cliffs— part of the Echizen Kaga Coastline Quasi National Park. This fifty-foot-tall wall of unusually shaped pentagonal and hexagonal rock columns, created by a volcanic eruption 130 million years ago, extends about two-thirds of a mile and is one of only three such rock formations in the world.
Please note: You must remove your shoes at Eiheiji Temple. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and more than 300 steps with no elevator available. Suitable only for physically fit guests. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Photographing the monks at Eiheiji temple is not allowed. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency, as most vendors do not accept US dollars or credit cards. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
