Nothing says Japan like matcha, tea and rice.
Learn about Maizuru tea — a local specialty — through tastings of roasted green tea (hojicha), sencha, and matcha. You will also discover how tea culture took root in the region, the history of matcha, and the characteristics that make Maizuru tea unique. Although the name may be unfamiliar, Maizuru tea is a high-quality tea that has won first place eight times in the National Tea Competition's Kabusecha category. Maizuru has long been known for its riverside soil, which is ideal for tea cultivation, and for its flourishing tea industry.
Try your hand at making Tango barasushi — a beloved local dish found only in the Tango region of Kyoto. It features finely flaked mackerel simmered in a sweet soy sauce. Sushi rice is placed in a shallow wooden box called a matsubuta, then topped with colorful ingredients such as mackerel, shiitake mushrooms, shredded omelet, and pickled ginger before being cut and served.
After preparing your barasushi, devour it along with tempura. These are the flavors of northern Kyoto, deeply rooted in its regional food culture.
After a relaxing dinner, you will return to the ship.
