Step back in time and travel to the town of Ise, known for centuries as the Holy City and located on the far tip of the Kii Peninsula. Its Ise-jingu Shrine complex is a designated National Treasure. Here, rivers and streams flow through the 222 acres of old-growth Japanese cypress forest that surrounds more than 125 shrines. The main shrines are the Naiku (Inner Shrine) and Geku (Outer Shrine). After crossing the wooden bridge, you'll pass through a Tori gate and visit some of the shrines.
The main building at each shrine is a simple thatched hut made of unpainted cypress in ancient Japanese style, with peg-joined wood. At its heart of the complex is the well-preserved Okage Yokocho, a three-acre street featuring a beautiful array of architecture. Built to resemble a town from the Edo Period (1603 - 1868) and Meiji Era (1868 – 1912), the street is lined with houses, shops, and restaurants, many of which have been serving pilgrims and tourists for several centuries.
Sample local treats (at your own expense) and shop for your perfect souvenir before returning to Toba.
