Step back more than 1,000 years and discover the story of the first known European settlement in North America. Your journey begins with a short drive to L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the location where Norse explorers established a settlement around the year 1000.
Upon arrival, you'll visit the Interpretive Centre, where exhibits, artifacts, and multimedia displays explain how archaeologists uncovered evidence of Viking life in Newfoundland. Explore the reconstructed Norse settlement and walk among sod buildings modeled after the original structures found on the site. Along the way, you'll see a blacksmith's workshop where iron was crafted from local bog ore and learn how Viking settlers lived, worked, and prepared for voyages across the North Atlantic.
Next, travel to Norstead Viking Village, a recreated Norse trading port located nearby. Here, costumed interpreters bring the Viking Age to life as you explore the Chieftain's Hall, workshops, and waterfront area. Learn about Viking commerce, shipbuilding, navigation, and daily life while walking in the footsteps of some of history's most famous explorers.
Following your visit to Norstead, reboard your transportation for the short return drive to the ship.
Important Notes: This tour involves walking over a variety of surfaces, including pavement, gravel paths, grass, and compacted dirt trails. Guests should dress for changing weather conditions and wear comfortable walking shoes, along with a warm layer and rain jacket if needed.
