With a spectacular fjord-side setting amongst the mountains, and its collection of historic buildings, Isafjordur lies close to the amazing Isafjardardjup, the largest fjord in Iceland. Driving along the shore will allow us a fantastic view of the stunning Westfjords scenery, on our way making a stop for a great photo.
Continuing, we arrive at Litlibaer, a small, historic farmhouse with a traditional turf roof that was built in 1895. Lying close to the shore, it’s not uncommon to see seals at Litlibaer, relaxing in their natural habitat.
At the farm, we will learn how the Icelanders used to live in the 1900's – the daily struggle to raise enough livestock, catch fish, and grow crops to feed a family living in Iceland’s harsh climate. Inside the small building, we can experience churning fresh cream into butter, and then taste it on traditional Icelandic flatbread.
Life at Litlibaer is more comfortable for today’s visitors, and after our tour we will be offered refreshments of coffee, waffles, and homemade jam before heading back to Isafjordur. On the way back, we can relax and enjoy the stunning scenery once again, reflecting on the life at the small, turf-roofed farm.
Please note: This tour involves some walking, though the distance will not be more than one mile. Although the route is mainly on paved flat surfaces, there are some inclines, steps, gravel paths, and uneven surfaces that may create a barrier to access for guests who use a wheelchair or for those with limited mobility. It is advised that you wear warm, layered clothing, and sturdy, closed-toe, non-skid shoes to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion.
