Nikopolis, an ancient Greco-Roman city, is situated in the suburbs of the modern city of Preveza. It was built in 31 BC by the Roman Emperor Octavian — nephew of Julius Caesar — in celebration of his victory in the Battle of Aktion over the Egyptian fleet of Antony and Cleopatra. That battle is now believed to have had a profound impact on the course of history, and this new city represented Octavian's successful unification of the Roman Empire under his administration.
Roman Nikopolis was a beautiful city, featuring temples, markets, theatres, gymnasiums, thermal baths, mansion houses, and other monuments. You will view the ancient city ruins from a distance and admire the major remaining structures.
Visit the recently renovated museum, which houses an extensive array of impressive, locally excavated artifacts.
Then head to the relatively modern city of Preveza, whose idyllic Old Town area is a joy to behold. A brief guided tour of the city will be followed by some free time to further explore on your own. Feel free to purchase a cooling refreshment from a café (at your own expense).
Please note: Travel time is approximately an hour and 20 minutes each way. Tour does not operate on Mondays or Tuesdays.
