Travelling to Black Mountain (Kalkajaka) is a journey into the mysterious, where a striking black granite mountain rises abruptly from the landscape. Located in a National Park of the same name, almost 2,000 acres of protected land are home to this landform that was formed by hot magma solidifying under the earth's crust. Steeped in Aboriginal legend and geological intrigue, Black mountain presents an enigmatic sight, inviting adventurous souls to explore the area and ponder this natural wonder in far North Queensland.
After visiting Black Mountain, head to Lion's Den Hotel – a rustic pub built in 1875 during the mining boom. You'll have time to purchase a drink from the bar (at your own expense) and to chat with the locals.
Watch for some of the local Cooktown monuments en route back to the pier.
Please note:
Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. The terrain is uneven with gaps between boulders and rocks. Tour does not operate on holidays.
