Porto Novo is Benin's administrative capital. Nestled on the shores of Oueme River, it boasts leafy streets and wonderful colonial architecture, such as the Brazilian-style Great Mosque which was once a church. The city's pace is genteel, and its interesting museums make for a striking contrast to Cotonou, Benin's economic capital.
Today, we will embark on an unforgettable tour of the city, starting with a visit to the magnificent Hommé Palace, home to the King of Porto Novo.
First, we will stop in front of the Zangbeto monument. Now on to the Honmé Museum. Honmé Museum sits within the walled palace of King Toffa, who signed the first treaty with France in 1863. It focuses on the alounloun musical instrument -- the key element in the local Porto Novo adjogan music. The museum traces the instrument's symbolism as a sound that was a metaphor for the King's strength and power.
As we approach the palace, we'll be greeted by the sounds of the Ajogan dance by the palace guards. This dance is a symbol of strength and power and is performed to honor the king and his ancestors. We'll have the opportunity to witness the dancers in their colorful costumes and watch as they move to the beat of the drums and bells.
The palace, with its ornate architecture and intricate carvings, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Beninese people. Inside, we'll have the chance to see the king's throne room and learn about the customs and traditions of the kingdom.
Next, if time permits, we will make our way to the Botanical Garden of Porto Novo, a lush oasis of tropical flora and fauna. The garden, which spans over 20 hectares, is home to a diverse collection of plant species, including rare orchids, towering palm trees, and colorful flowering plants. We'll take a leisurely stroll through the gardens, admiring the natural beauty and enjoying the peaceful ambiance.
After lunch at a local restaurant, you'll return to the ship in Cotonou.
