Welcome to Southeast Alaska's first distillery. Join this tour for a peak behind the curtain at some of the Last Frontier's favorite spirits, made on-site in Haines, Alaska. Set within the historic district of Fort Seward, Port Chilkoot Distillery is renowned for award-winning spirits and local ambiance.
Start by meeting our tour guide at the cruise ship dock and walk two blocks uphill through the historical Quartermaster district of Fort William H. Seward (built in 1902 by the U.S. Army). From the deck of the beautifully renovated historical building that houses the Tasting Room, you'll learn the history of the distillery, its context within the community of Haines, and the owners' journey of renovating and building the distillery.
Visit the production building and barrel room where you will see and learn about the distillation process, hear stories about the distillery's connections to Haines culture and maritime industry, and have the opportunity to try a tour-exclusive sample of Wrackline Rye Whiskey straight from the barrel.
Dive deeper into the Haines experience with a sensory exploration and tasting of the distillery’s six handcrafted Brightwork Bitters. These herbal and floral tinctures incorporate plants of Alaska that you will be able to see, smell, and taste. Learn how these are added to spirits to put the finishing touches on a cocktail.
Then return with your guide to the Tasting Room to enjoy the craft spirits in tasting flights or handcrafted cocktails made with fresh syrups and juices. Ask questions, visit with tasting room hosts, and shop for bottles and merchandise to take home. The tour includes a cocktail or five-spirit tasting flight, souvenir shot glass, and 10% off shore merchandise.
Port Chilkoot Distillery has a quintessential Alaskan story; one of trailblazing, determination, creativity, and community. Come be a part of the story as you learn about the art and science that goes into creating small-batch, hand-crafted spirits in the heart of the Inside Passage.
At the end of the tour, walk two blocks downhill back to the cruise ship dock (15 minutes) or continue your exploration of the Fort area on your own; distillery tour guides will point guests in the right direction.
Please note: Included in the tour are: guided walk to and from the cruise ship dock, tour of the distillation facility and tasting room, facilitation and attention from aprofessional tour guide, a taste sample of rye whiskey from the barrel, taste samples of six handcrafted bitters, one cocktail or flight of five tasting samples, complementary souvenir shot glass, and 10% discount off merchandise in the store. Restrooms and water are provided in the tasting room and in the production building. Guests have the option to purchase out additional drink in the tasting room during or after the tour. By Alaska tasting room law, it’s required to limit customers to two (2) drinks or flights per person per day and to end serving by 9pm. Minimum age is 21. Tour does not operate on Sundays.
