With fewer than 2,500 residents, Haines boasts three award-winning alcohol manufacturers. It’s great to know where this town’s priorities lie, which of course means showcasing locally-foraged herbs, capturing the fantastic terroir of Southeast Alaska, loving craftsmanship, and a sense of can-do community… spirit!
Begin at the beginning -- at the Haines Brewing Company, which just celebrated 25 years of brewing. You can taste the love and craftsmanship in each glass made by Paul and Jeanne, who host the local community every weekday at five o’clock. Inside, you’ll find a glass of fresh beer awaiting you, along with a roomful of laughter and friendship. The challenge here lies in choosing which one of the amazing beers on tap you’ll sample.
Next up is the Three Northmen Meadery. Chris and Jeremy started this as a passion project after their work restoring several decaying buildings on Main Street. The mayor credited them with “saving Main Street.” The building you’ll enter today is their last restoration in the form of a Viking longhouse with handmade wood furnishings and trophy mounts of moose and caribou. Their process of fermentation and incorporation of wild foraged ingredients has resulted in celebrated meads and ciders. Enjoy these, along with the awesome backstory and outback atmosphere.
The Port Chilkoot Distillery -- a success story written by Heather and Sean -- is a full-scale distilling operation in a town that is as far removed from the supply and distribution chains as it gets. With awards from the American Distilling Institute, San Francisco World Spirits, and American Craft Spirits competitions, its tasting room reflects its vision -- to host guests in an experience that engages all the senses and leaves a lasting memory.
Please note: Minimum age is 21 years. Allergy note: There is a significant amount of peanut dust on site from cracked-shelled peanuts at Three Northman Meadery. Tour requires walking between the van and venues. Terrain includes gravel parking lots, concrete and wood floors inside the venues, steps and uneven surfaces. The brewery has only limited seating. Bring local currency and credit cards.
