This tour combines Klawock Highlights and Prince of Whales Whale & Marine Mammals Cruise for a well-rounded experience by land and sea.
Take your seat in a purpose-built wildlife-viewing boat. Hot beverages, including coffee, tea and cocoa, are included. Keep an eye out for whale sightings. Humpback whales come to Klawock's waters to feed on plankton, herring, and salmon fry for the Alaska summer. Sea otter groups, known as rafts, often drift along with the movement of the tide.
Back in Klawock, embrace the rich culture and history that has sustained the people of Klawock for more than 10,000 years. Past and present intersect as you walk along the Klawock River Trail. Towering trees and the soothing melody of the river are your companions, along with an abundance of flora and fauna.
At the Klawock Heenya Carving Shed, artistry and the heritage of totem carving come to life as you visit the active workshop of Jon Rowan. This is the training ground for Klawock's next generation of totem carvers and a testament to the community's dedication to preserving and sharing traditional craftsmanship. Learn how to select the right tree, details of the traditional and modern carving techniques, and how the community of Klawock maintains some of the oldest totems in Alaska while adding new exemplars to the collection.
Finally, head to Klawock Totem Park to stand among Klawock's totem towers. With twenty-one pieces of formline art, this is the largest collection of totems in Alaska, including story, healing and shame totems. Your guide shares the meaning of these incredible monuments that represent different Tlingit tribes from around Southeast Alaska and their connection with Klawock.
Please note: Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Tour sequence may vary. A boxed lunch is provided.
