This rigorous hike takes you to the top of Newton Peak -- one of the highest elevation geographic points in the immediate vicinity of Nome. You will also view the White Alice Cold War historic site across the valley on Anvil Mountain. Four large billboard-like antennae, built by the US Air Force during the Cold War, dominate the landscape. Today, they are fully decommissioned, but Nome's residents cherish them as way-finding points, so they are preserved for their historical significance.
Notes:
Wherever Included Experience tours are offered, guests are allowed to participate in only one included experience per call unless otherwise specified in the tour description. Please be sure to book your included experience in advance as space may be limited on your specific choice. Distance is approximately 3 miles with 500 feet elevation gain. Terrain includes steep inclines, uneven trails, and elevation changes. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Bring bottled water. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer; bring gloves, a scarf and a warm hat. Wear insect repellent and sunscreen. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here; your guide is learning, and you are trading breadth of group guiding experience for authentic interaction.
