The third-oldest city in Alaska, ruled by four nations under three flags, Wrangell boasts a rich, unruly and diverse history that grabs the imagination. Get acquainted with Wrangell and Southeast Alaska island culture through the eyes of your Native guide.
Learn about the diverse influences that have shaped Wrangell, starting with the earliest inhabitants -- the Tlingit Nation. You're invited to visit Chief Shakes' Tribal House for a glimpse of the Tlingit way of life and to hear stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Next, uncover the story of Fort Wrangell at the Wrangell Museum. Several historic sites are also visible from the shuttle on a panoramic drive.
Finally, view the ancient petroglyphs of Petroglyph Beach and learn of their significance to the Native people. Watch a petroglyph-rubbing demonstration and bring home an unusual souvenir from your exploration of Wrangell.
Please note: Tour requires considerable walking and standing at Petroglyph Beach and the Wrangell Museum. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Dress warmly in layered clothing with gloves, a scarf, and a hat; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. The shuttle vehicle cannot accommodate wheelchairs. Restrooms are available.
