Hike into the heart of the lush Pacific wilderness, where towering trees create a canopy overhead, and the trail meanders through moss-covered forest floors. A viewpoint overlooks reversing rapids and a pretty, murmuring river.
Begin your journey with a brief ride aboard an air-conditioned motorcoach. Along the way, your guide will offer insight into the history of Prince Rupert and the surrounding communities.
Upon arrival at a trailhead in the Butze Rainforest, set off on a hike deep into the forest. Part of the fun will be learning about the various plants and trees, their importance in traditional native medicines and culture, and their role in the food chain.
Rest at a viewpoint overlooking the Butze Rapids, which are quite peaceful at high and low tide. However, at other times, the rapids foam and flail, roaring as they reverse direction and change character with the tidal swing.
Enjoy a snack and bottled water at the rapids before returning to the trailhead and to downtown Prince Rupert.
Please note: Wear sturdy walking shoes. The hike is about two miles round trip. Participants must be able to sustain a moderate walking pace for the duration of the hike. Dress warmly in layered clothing with gloves, a scarf, and a hat; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Bring a backpack to stow any layers you shed.
