Board a local charter boat at the pier and begin your day with a journey along the east coast of Nosy Be to Ampangoriana village.
Upon arrival, head ashore by dinghy and walk through this fishing village on your way to the Black Lemur Sanctuary. You'll have time to browse for souvenirs and mingle with the locals along the way. At the sanctuary, learn how to spot the males and females as you watch them climbing and lounging in the trees. Fruit treats will be provided should you wish to feed the lemurs, but don't be surprised if they want to jump onto your arm or shoulder -- they are quite friendly and comfortable with humans. The animals have always enjoyed the protection offered by the villagers, and today the visitors the sanctuary attracts greatly benefit the economy of this tiny settlement.
Head to the local snack bar for a treat of your own. Take a seat in the shade by the beach and enjoy the great view of Lokobe Natural Reserve and the surrounding isles. As you rest, Sakalava women will demonstrate their tablecloth embroidery technique and the village band will perform a traditional show for you.
Conclude your day with some free time to stroll on the beach, browse for souvenirs in the village, or even take a swim.
Please note:
Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, sunscreen and a hat. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair.
The dinghy will make a wet landing; wear shoes that you don't mind getting wet. The standard of transportation and level of guide experience may vary. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here and guides are often in training -- you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up.
