Begin with a drive along the coast of Iceland's longest fjord, Eyjafjörður, with an excellent view of Akureyri and its surrounding mountains.
After crossing Víkurskard Pass, you will view Fnjóskadalur Valley, where geological remains of glacial and post-glacial times can clearly be seen.
Stop at Godafoss -- the waterfall of heathen gods -- one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. The Skjalfandafljot River falls from a height of 36 feet over a breadth of 100 feet.
You'll drive directly to the Lake Myvatn area, stopping to view the Skutustadir Craters before lunch.
After lunch, visit the Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth -- a paradise of towering lava castles, natural arches and countless unexplored grottos. After visiting Dimmuborgir, continue onwards to Namaskard hot springs and geothermal area. Here you will have a lovely view of the area and you will find Hverarond, a Geyser strip, where fumaroles (steam springs) and mud springs scatter the landscape in a kaleidoscope of colors.
On the scenic return journey, you will stop at the Botanical Gardens to admire its 2,000 species of native and exotic flowers. Guests who wish to stay at the gardens to explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship.
You'll also enjoy a short panoramic drive through the town of Akureyri.
Please note: In general, flora is usually not in full bloom until June. All walking is optional; some sights can be viewed from the motorcoach. Terrain includes some inclines to and rough grass/mud/gravel paths. Suitable for guests with mobility limitations as walking is optional; however, the main sights are not easily accessible to guests using mobility aids. Small black flies (midges or "no-see-'ems") populate the Lake Myvatn area; although they don't bite, they can be quite annoying. Wear insect repellent and bring a light scarf, bandana or net to cover your face and/or mouth. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer; bring gloves, a scarf and a warm hat. Parents traveling with children under the age of 3 must rent a child's car seat from the tour operator; please see the Destination staff on board. You cannot use your child's car seat from home in Iceland.
