Embark on a truly unique adventure with a scenic mini cruise and guided hike through the cultural and historic landscapes of the archipelago south of Sisimiut. This immersive tour offers a rare opportunity to visit the pristine UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aasivissuit–Nipisat, an extraordinary cultural landscape that stretches from the Greenland Ice Cap through expansive reindeer hunting grounds, fjords, and coastal islands known for their prehistoric settlements.
Steeped in heritage, this region reflects over 4,500 years of Inuit history in West Greenland and preserves fascinating stories of encounters between Dutch whalers and Danish-Norwegian settlers, making it a significant chapter in North Atlantic exploration.
Your journey begins as you board a sturdy 12-passenger walk-around boat in Sisimiut. Cruise across the stunning Amarloq Fjord, passing Arajutsisut, before arriving at Nipisat Island—an essential site within the UNESCO designation. Upon landing, you will join an experienced guide for a walk around the island, discovering its rich and layered history, from Greenland’s earliest inhabitants to the establishment of the colony of Nipisene in 1729, which once included a mission station, whaling operation, and garrison.
Today, Nipisat is largely untouched, reclaimed by nature, where seabirds, sweeping coastal views, and rugged terrain create a serene and unforgettable backdrop. This combination of natural beauty and cultural depth makes the experience both enriching and visually spectacular.
Please Note: The hike includes uphill sections, and trails may be uneven or muddy. Participants should be able to walk approximately 3 miles (5 km) within about one hour. A moderate level of fitness is required due to the physical nature of the terrain. Appropriate footwear and outdoor clothing are strongly recommended.
